Projecting Machines:
- Emil and Max Skladanowsky - created their own film device for projecting films in November, 1895.
- Major Woodville Latham developed a projector that allowed for the slack forming loop that restrained the inertia of the take-up reel and prevented the tearing of the sprocket holes. It is still in use today.
- Birt Acres and Robert W. Paul also developed a machine to project films. Paul became the first manufacturer of projectors and a pioneering film producer in Britain.
- In 1896, Edison's Company, because it was unable to produce a workable projector on its own, purchased an improved version of Armat's movie projection machine and renamed it the Vitascope.

Film Industry and Audio
- By the end of the 1920s, film technology had made significant advances. Sound film production was virtually universal in Hollywood and within a few years it would be adopted in Britain, France, Germany, and Russia. Warner Bros. and Paramount also included twocolor Technicolor in many of their new sound features.
- The "Audion" tube which allowed amplification of electrical signals, was key to the development of both sound on film and sound on disc systems. De Forest was the first to successfully record sound on motion picture film in a process he called "Phonofilm".
- Sound films emphasized and benefited different genres than silents did. Most obviously, the musical film was born; the first classic-style Hollywood musical was The Broadway Melody (1929).
- Dialogue now took precedence over slapstick (chaplin) in Hollywood comedies. 1939, a major year for cinema, brought us timeless classics like The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind

This was a turbulent decade of monumental changes, tragedies, cultural events, assassinations and deaths, and advancements. |
